RV-4 built by Kreth Sink
N42KS is an example of Dick VanGrunsven RV-4 design built by Kreth Sink and flown for the past 25 years. Construction of 42KS began in 1988 and, three and a half years, 2000 hours “wrench in hand,” and 14,000 rivets later, it completed an uneventful first flight performing as advertised. The panel sports standard round gages with a Garmin GPS coupled to a single axis auto pilot and is IFR certified.
Designed as a “Total Performance” package, the RV-4 provides cross-country, short field and aerobatic performance on 160/180 horsepower. With a 30 gallon fuel capacity, the design offers a 500 mile range (with reserve) for two 180 lbs. passengers and modest luggage. Top speed exceeds 200 mph with a stall speed of 54 mph. Lots of performance for the money!
Advice for would be builders:
(1) Don’t begin a project unless you enjoy building as much as you enjoy flying. Otherwise, it will be tough to complete. Buy a completed project.
(2) Don’t deviate from plans unless you have full qualifications as an aircraft designer. One small “innocent” modification can cascade into a multitude of changes which could compromise the integrity of the original design.
